PROCRIT® is used to treat the anemia associated with chronic kidney disease, but there is more to managing chronic kidney disease.

If you are suffering from chronic kidney disease, your treatment plan, which may or may not include PROCRIT® for anemia, will be based on your stage of kidney disease.

Depending on the stage of your disease and other health problems you may have, your treatment may include the following:

If you have other health problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, your doctor may first make sure they are well controlled before treating your kidney problem. You may be asked to cut down on salt in your diet and may also need medications to control blood pressure. If you are overweight, your doctor may ask you to lose weight. If you have diabetes, you will need to monitor your blood sugar, follow your diet, and take your medications regularly as directed.
Chances of developing heart problems are high if you have kidney disease. It is very important to control diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, if you have them, to prevent heart problems. In addition, heart and kidney disease worsen with smoking. If you are a smoker, your doctor may recommend that you quit.
